Amphoteric Oxide Definition in Chemistry
An amphoteric oxide is an oxide that can act as either an acid or base in a reactionà to produce a salt and water. Amphoterism depends on the oxidation states available to a chemical species. Because metals have multiple oxidation states, they form amphoteric oxides and hydroxides. Amphoteric Oxide Examples Metals that display amphoterism include copper, zinc, lead, tin, beryllium, and aluminum. Al2O3 is an amphoteric oxide. When reacted with HCl, it acts as a base to form the salt AlCl3. When reacted with NaOH, it acts as an acid to form NaAlO2.Typically, oxides of medium electronegativity are amphoteric. Amphiprotic Molecules Amphiprotic molecules are a type of amphoteric species that donate or accept H or a proton. Examples of amphiprotic species include water (which is self-ionizable) as well as proteins and amino acids (which have carboxylic acid and amine groups). For example, the hydrogen carbonate ion can act as an acid: HCO3âËâà OHâËâà ââ â CO32âËâà H2O or as a base: HCO3âËâà H3Oà ââ â H2CO3à H2O Keep in mind, while all amphiprotic species are amphoteric, not all amphoteric species are amphiprotic. An example is zinc oxide, ZnO, which does not contain a hydrogen atom and cannot donate a proton. The Zn atom can act as a Lewis acid to accept an electron pair from OHâËâ. Related Terms The word amphoteric derives from the Greek word amphoteroi, which means both. The terms amphichromatic and amphichromic are related, which apply to an acid-base indicator that yields one color when reacted with an acid and a different color when reacted with a base. Uses of Amphoteric Species Amphoteric molecules that have both acidic and basic groups are called ampholytes. They are primarily found as zwitterions over a certain pH range. Ampholytes may be used in isoelectric focusing to maintain a stable pH gradient.

When Things Fall Apart By Janice Mirikitani - 987 Words
I do not trust people who don t love themselves and yet tell me, I love you. There is an African saying which is: Be careful when a naked person offers you a shirt. This is a quote by Mayra Angelou that it clearly explains that, having kindness for yourself is the most important thing for people. Having kindness for yourself itââ¬â¢s the first step that everyone should take. ââ¬Å"Suicide Noteâ⬠by Janice Mirikitani talks about a girl who committed suicide just because she didnââ¬â¢t have kindness for herself. I choose to compare the reading by Mirikitani with chapter number five ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s Never Too Lateâ⬠of the book ââ¬Å"When Things Fall Apartâ⬠by Pema Chodron because this chapter talks about how people should start having kindness for themselves. This is a part of the book that Asian-American girl who committed suicide, which Mirikitani talks should have read it before taking the decision to end her life. ââ¬Å"Suicide Noteâ⬠by Janice Mirikitani talks about an Asian-American college student who committed suicide. This is her suicide note, that contains an apology to her parents for not being a perfect student with a four-point grade average. She also apologizes to her parents for disappointing them, even though she has worked very hard. But this wasn t the only reason why she committed suicide. She goes on by apologizing to her parents for not being the son they always wanted it: ââ¬Å"If only I were a son, shoulders broad as the sunset threading through pine, I would see the light in my

Theme of Deception free essay sample
Theme of Deception Deception is a concept that has a very obvious form, but also a very in depth form. In the play A Streetcar Named Desire the theme of deception weaves its way into the main story line in two major ways; The obvious one being Stanley Kowalskiââ¬â¢s lying and the underlying deception that goes on inside of Blanche DuBoisââ¬â¢s mind. Stanley Kowalski is the perfect example of a deceptive person. He tries to present himself as an honest, loving husband when he is everything but. In reality, Stanley is a lying, unfaithful, and abusive husband to his wife Stella. In fact, he has Stella wrapped around his finger. So much so that she overlooks his drunken abusiveness and makes herself believe that that is really what love is. One interprets Stanleyââ¬â¢s unfaithfulness by his willingness to rape Blanche. If he is so willing to have sex with his wifeââ¬â¢s own sister, then it is easily determined that he has no problem sleeping with other women when he is away from home weeks at a time. The fact that he did in fact rape Blanche but lies to Stella about it and makes her sister seem unnecessarily crazy. Although Stanleyââ¬â¢s ways seem to take the front seat in the deception department, it is, however, not the biggest deception portrayed in the play. The most deceit shown in the play is that going on in Blancheââ¬â¢s own mind. The most lying that Blanche does is not with others but with herself. Blanche goes through a traumatic experience at a very young age and to protect her mind and her heart she shields herself from the harsh realities of the world. Her self-deception comes with her inability to let reality overcome her fantasies. At a certain point Blanche does reveal to Mitch that she fibs about her life because she ââ¬Å"refuses to accept the hand that fate has dealt her. â⬠By that, she means she does not wish to accept the fact that the boy she was once in love with was gay and ultimately killed himself because of her. It made her feel guilty and undesirable while led to her obsession with youth and wanting to be loved by another man. Lying to herself and to others allows her to make life appear as it should be rather than as it is. When Stanley refuses to ââ¬Å"have the wool pulled over his eyesâ⬠and believe Blancheââ¬â¢s lies, she is not sure how to deal with facing the reality of what her life has actually become. As most know, deception always leads in disasters and heartbreak. Stanleyââ¬â¢s deception will ultimately lead to an unhappy marriage and possibly an unhappy life, while Blancheââ¬â¢s deception goes far deeper than that. As her realization of what she has been doing to herself is called to her attention it only pushes herself farther into her dream world for it is also too painful for her to cope with. At the end of the play Blanche seems to have totally gone into a state of insanity when she leaves the objective world behind in order to avoid accepting reality. She walks away with the doctor seeming to be happy about what her future holds only because she is not fully aware of what will really happen to her. Blancheââ¬â¢s final, deluded happiness confirms, to some extent, fantasy is an important force at play in every individualââ¬â¢s experience, despite realityââ¬â¢s inevitable triumph. The most deceit that Blanche dealt with was her own which one can only believe will lead to her death.

Overcoming free essay sample
Growing up in America as a child of an Iranian family has been a challenge. On one hand I wanted to be true to my heritage and on the other hand I wanted to learn and acquire positive aspects of culture from my new country. My parents have always been strict with my social privileges. For my parents the most important thing for me is to be a good person and academically successful. My mother always in a serious manner tells me ââ¬Å"You donââ¬â¢t need to follow what your friends do!â⬠. As a child I never wanted to accept this, because I wanted to fit in with my peers. I wanted to live the relaxed life they seemed to have. In elementary school I was always concerned with what others thought of me. My self-consciousness spurred from the fact that I was the different kid in my school, the one with difference in language, religion and culture. We will write a custom essay sample on Overcoming or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page This always made me feel like I would never be accepted by my friends in class and at school. In Jr. High most of the people who I wanted to become friends with were superficial and self-centered. All they cared about was clothes, fashion, and who was in their social network. I tried to make connections with them, but I was never successful, again because of my many cultural differences. In high school I realized that this is a great country and there are many opportunities for people who like to work and study hard. So I became independent and choose a path that would not compromise my beliefs. I focused on taking advanced classes and practicing my violin while my friends chose to take the self-centered route. Because of my rigorous and diverse schedule more opportunities opened up to me. I met different people who were more conscious of the choices they made. I learned from these people the importance of helping others. I began to volunteer at my city library and got involved wit h human rights groups. I know from my own experiences that it was beneficial I did not give in to the peer pressure. I have learned it is important to maintain my own culture while adopting new qualities from the society as well.
